Statewide availability of the CareerReady Colorado certificate program began on July 1, 2009 after the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment piloted the certificate in eight (8) workforce regions from January 1 - June 30, 2009. The pilot initiative was endorsed and supported by a grant from the Colorado Workforce Development Council.  Statewide CareerReady Colorado Certification is developed, initiated & implemented by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

Businesses need new hires who can achieve job proficiency quickly in order to meet the demands of an increasingly competitive global economy. CareerReady Colorado is a complete solution for making comparisons between an individual's skill levels and the skill levels required by specific jobs. Businesses across the nation are using this type of certification for hiring new employees and assessing workers. The assessments are developed by ACT, the national testing company best known for the ACT college admissions test. Each assessment takes about one hour to complete - three hours total.  The assessments are proctored so results can be trusted.

Career seekers can use the CareerReady Colorado Certificate to show employers that they have basic skills for employment or promotion. Even if someone has a high school diploma, GED, or a post-secondary degree, the certificate further verifies that the individual can handle the kinds of tasks - finding information, reading instructions and directions, and working with figures - that are common in today's workplace.

Job Seekers can earn a certificate when they pass three WorkKeys assessments: Reading for Information, Locating Information and Applied Mathematics. When the assessments are successfully completed, the workforce region awards a certificate that has been signed by the Governor. If more training is needed to get a certificate, job seekers can use free, online training programs (such as KeyTrain) at participating workforce centers.
