Our Story

Brief History:

2003 to 2005 – Activities throughout the State of Michigan were loosely organized leading to our first annual one-day conference in 2005. Activities were based on the previous Michigan Department of Career Development WorkKeys initiatives. In West Michigan we were working on our Manufacturing Council position paper published in August 2003 that included WorkKeys and Guaranteed Diploma. In central and Southeast Michigan community colleges and career technical centers were training Job Profilers and engaging employers.

2006 to 2009 – WIRED Grants – West Michigan focused on employer demand leading to over 500 LOCs. Mid-Michigan was primarily focused on K-12 adoption. The two WIRED regions formed the Michigan NCRC Advocates to reach out to the rest of the state, all 83 counties, and to reach into all sectors of talent development. The website was launched and came to be recognized as a great resource for certificate advocates. The Advocates hosted two-day conferences in 2007 and 2008. A number of states sent staff to the 2009 conference to study the “Michigan Model.” We had visitors from 11 states. A few states had teams at the conference. This inspired us to reach beyond Michigan and relaunch the organization as the National CRC Advocates.

2010 – Best practice models were documented and published including Skills Now!, The Alignment Model, the Alignment Process, Penciltucky Budget Illustration, etc. The website was expanded to organize LOCs and individual sign-ups from all 3099 counties in all 50 states. The number of LOCs grew from 575 in December 2009 to 650 in December 2010. In West Michigan, GRCC continued supply-side work with Pathways Out of Poverty Funding and the Walmart Grant to extend our WIRED success. ACT published an Employer Handbook for the NCRC. We held our first Career Readiness Planning Institute in Oklahoma. We assisted in the creation of strategic plans for certificate programs in Oklahoma and Michigan. The WIRED Health Care RSA work became the Health Care Employer Council funded by the employers. They are driving adoption of the NCRC and ACT Personal Skills Assessments: Performance, Talent, and Fit.

Plans:

2011 to 2012 – The National CRC Advocates have securing funding to support the organizational infrastructure. This will enable the continuous evolution of the website, posting of Employer LOCs and Experiences on the website, and posting of Advocates on the website. These activities document and build our two main groups of Advocates: employers and individuals.
